#BigBadBoats: the hashtag that sums up Class 1. The 2024 season of the powerboat racing's premier class was almost ready to begin, and I took the lead in creating a versatile design system which would be able to sustain itself for the full season and into the future.
The All-American vibe and iconic locations are an important part of Class 1. Because of this, I took inspiration from 1980s American design, keen to bring in bright colours and gradients. I also carried this on in the way I edited the photos in more templated graphics, giving them a warm grade and a slight grain, meaning templates would feel tropical and sunny even on more overcast race days.
Having worked with a number of boat racing clients now, I was keen to bring a different style of race poster to Class 1 this season, and went with the idea of a set of race posters from a birds eye view, zooming out from the boats and showing off the picturesque locations of the season. Of course, the classic hero graphics still had their place – images of boats racing at 160mph never fail to go down well with powerboat racing fans!
